Water Heater Installation & Repair on Long Island

A cold shower on a January morning in Nassau County is not a wait-and-see problem. We stock the common tank sizes on the truck, we install tankless and hybrid units, and we will tell you plainly whether your heater has years left or is on borrowed time.

Hot water back today

Standard tanks are on the truck. Most replacements are finished the same day you call.

Sized for your house

We count bathrooms and fixtures, not guesses. An undersized unit is the most common mistake we undo.

Repair when repair makes sense

A thermocouple or element is a cheap fix. We will say so instead of selling you a new tank.

Permit pulled, code met

Expansion tank, drip leg, proper venting and a filed permit. It matters when you sell the house.

Water Heater Installation on Long Island, Explained

No hot water? Start here.

Before you replace anything, it is worth knowing what actually failed. On gas tanks it is usually the thermocouple or the gas control valve. On electric units it is almost always a heating element or the upper thermostat. Both are inexpensive parts, and both are repairs we do every week.

What is not worth repairing: a tank that is leaking from the body. Once the glass lining fails, the steel goes quickly, and no amount of patching brings it back. If you see water pooling under the tank rather than dripping from a fitting, you are replacing it.

Tank or tankless for a Long Island home?

Tankless is genuinely better for a lot of houses — endless hot water, a twenty-year life, and it gives you back the closet. But it needs a bigger gas line and its own venting, and in older Massapequa and Levittown houses that upgrade is a real cost we would rather you know about up front than discover mid-install.

Our honest rule of thumb: if you have two bathrooms or fewer and the existing gas line is undersized, a quality tank is the better value. If you are already opening walls, running a big family, or planning to stay twenty years, go tankless and do not look back.

Hybrid heat-pump units are the third option and they are excellent in a conditioned basement — roughly a third of the running cost of electric resistance. They need headroom and they do cool the space around them, which most Long Island basements can live with.

Hard water is why your heater died early

Much of Long Island runs hard water, and hardness is the single biggest killer of water heaters here. Scale settles on the bottom of the tank, insulates the burner from the water, and cooks the tank from the inside. That rumbling sound is scale, and it means the unit is working far harder than it should.

Flushing the tank once a year genuinely adds years. We do it as part of a maintenance visit, and if your water is severely hard we will talk to you about whether a softener pays for itself in your situation. Often it does.

Good questions

Water Heater Installation: What People Ask Us.

How long does a water heater last on Long Island?

Eight to twelve years for a standard tank, and hard water shortens that. Annual flushing genuinely adds years. Tankless units run twenty or more with descaling.

Can you replace my water heater the same day?

Usually yes. We carry standard 40- and 50-gallon gas and electric tanks on the trucks. Tankless and hybrid units are ordered, and typically installed within a few days.

Is tankless worth it in an older house?

It depends on your gas line and venting. In many older Long Island homes the upgrade to support a tankless unit is a real additional cost. We check before quoting so the number you get is the number you pay.

Water heater went on a Sunday with a house full of family. Tony was here in an hour and a half, had the tank on the truck, and we had hot water before dinner. Priced it before he started and that was the price.

Two other companies quoted me for a full sewer replacement. Ray cameraed the line, showed me the footage, and said one joint was the problem. Spot repair, a third of the price. That is a rare thing.

We flooded twice before we called Flow’s. They put in a proper pit, a real pump and a battery backup, and then fixed the grading outside that nobody else had mentioned. Dry through the last two nor’easters.

Mike handled the plumbing for our whole kitchen renovation and was the only trade on the job who hit every date. He also caught a galvanized line in the wall that would have been a nightmare later.

Kitchen sink backed up every few months for years. They jetted the line instead of just snaking it and explained exactly why it kept happening. Two years later, no problems.

Burst pipe at 11pm in February. A real person answered, told me which valve to shut while they drove over, and stayed until it was dry. I have recommended them to half my block since.

Converted us from oil to gas and coordinated everything, including the parts that were National Grid’s job. I did not have to chase anybody once. Bills dropped immediately.
